19 Toxic Habits To Quit Before New Year. Reset Your Life Before It’s Too Late

We all have some toxic habits in our lives. Either we have been carrying it for years, or some are just new and addictive.

But whatever the scenario, toxic habits are harmful, no matter how old or new they are. Our job is to break away from it as soon as possible.

Hence, in this post, I’ve listed down the 19 toxic habits you gotta quit before it’s too late.

Procrastination

If you ask me to mention one toxic habit that can destroy your life, it’s procrastination.

Procrastination is the epitome of sinister. And the worst part is that it’s sneaky. You will only know that you’re procrastinating if you’re aware enough.

Most people think they are in deep thought and need some time, but they procrastinate before even knowing it.

Eat that Frog” is a great book explaining how to crush procrastination and be productive daily.

Here’s an easy way to eliminate procrastination even before it hits you: Do the most manageable tasks first. The so-called “easy things” are what causes procrastination because you think, “It’s a small task, and I can complete it after some time.” That time never comes.

Compulsive Spending

Compulsive spending is a dangerously toxic habit you must get rid of.

Especially if you shop using your credit card. Those CC bills will pill up and haunt you pretty soon if you’re not aware enough.

Compulsive spending also means you are buying stuff you may never need. So, you’re misusing the money you earn.

Yeah, I’m not advising you to go full-on minimalist and lead a life like a monk, but you should only buy things you need.

Overeating

Before I write anything about eating, note that I’m not judging what and how much you eat. You are free to eat anything you want.

But you know what? There’s a thin line between eating and overeating. People who live to eat are overeaters, and people who eat to live are usual eaters. Unfortunately, most people fill it out and call it a day. But overeating has a long-term negative impact.

Research has indicated that overeating can cause mental health issues, severe anxiety, and depression. Of course, the reverse is also true, where people suffering from depression and anxiety overeat.

So, if you want to stay healthy, overeating is one toxic habit you need to get rid of…

Gossiping

Now, you have to accept this: women are experts at gossip. Of course, not all of them are the same. But if you’re one of them, please stop!

Gossiping also adversely impacts your brain if you don’t know. Gossiping about someone invites opposing forces in your life. You eventually become pessimistic and look for negative aspects in everything to satiate your gossiping thirst.

At first, gossiping can be fun, but before you know it, you’ll get hooked on it and start searching for something new to gossip about. Trust me, it’s addictive!

Quit this toxic habit today before it’s too late.

Checking Phone Too Often

Checking your phone too often or right after you wake up is a destructive and damaging habit. Spend some time with closed eyes and feel the environment and your thoughts. You can either mentally positive affirmations or visualize a great day ahead.

Visualize something you want to manifest. Doing this the first thing after waking up is common among optimistic and successful people. Checking your phone too often after waking is a compulsive habit that causes procrastination.

If you can’t take your eyes off your phone even when nothing is going on, you’re probably hooked on it. Don’t let your phone control you. Use the “Do Not Disturb” feature when you’re onto something important.

Being A “Yes” Person

Harsh but true, a YES person is not respected anywhere. They may be loved by all, but they lose their personality, and external situations drive them. In fact, a person who always says YES encounters more enemies in the future than a NO person.

When someone’s always saying “YES,” it might be time to toss those responses in the trash. Seriously, if you do it from the heart, you’ll feel a sense of relief. The reason? These “YES” people are vibrating at a lower energy level than everyone else. They’re held back by guilt and shame, and saying “NO” feels like a crime to them.

I’ll be honest here. I was a YES person years ago, and it took me an insane amount of courage to get rid of it. But the sheer freedom I felt after I abandoned it is still unexplainable after all these years.

Whining

Whining is cute when a kid does it, but not with an adult. It’s outright irritating when people whine about everything. Whining or complaining sends a negative signal to the Universe. Whining sends a sign of “lack” to the Universe. And since the Universe only responds to what you put out there, it’s going to give you more stuff to whine about. So try to focus on the good things in life instead of complaining all the time.

Whining is literally a vicious cycle of sadness. You complain about not having something, the Universe senses it and sends you even more lack… and the process continues.

But it’s okay; what you did this year doesn’t matter. Now, it’s time you improve yourself and focus more on the opportunities and not the absence of it. And when you start focusing more on the optimistic side of things, your life will take a positive turn.

Showing Off

You may think of showing off your superiority. STOP IT! Especially if you’re consciously doing it. How should you stop it? And why? The habit or compulsion to show off comes from a sense of inferiority. Think about it a little more…You’re trying to show yourself as superior because you think you’re inferior to others.

How can you get rid of it? By being grateful. Gratitude humbles you down. Being thankful for your good situation makes you more receptive to good vibes from the Universe. Your energetic vibration automatically increases, and you attract better opportunities in life.

If you’re shy and cannot show gratitude immediately, say Thank You to everyone when they do something for you. Imbibe this good habit and your life will be blessed with something you never thought would.

Negative Self-Talk

I’m sick of people always saying stuff like, “That’s never going to happen to me,” or “I’m not lucky enough to get something like that.” It’s like they’re cursing themselves and everyone else around them. They think it’s a way to motivate themselves, but it limits their potential. Negative self-talk totally messes with your subconscious mind.

Suppose you used to constantly criticize yourself even when you got an A+ grade. In that case, this sends an insanely negative message to the subconscious mind. In the end, the subconscious mind slowly stops providing suggestions to you.

A simple sentence: “I’m so lucky and grateful” can immensely impact your subconscious mind and send a beautiful message to the Universe.

If not all the toxic habits on this list, I urge you to get rid of this one negative self-talk. Believe me, you’ll never regret it if you change how you talk to yourself.

Feeling Shame & Guilt For Small Issues

When you’re being too hard on yourself, it evidently makes you feel ashamed and guilty. Words like “Shame on you” and “Don’t you have no shame?” can become a norm. Doing this can really mess up your mind and your self-esteem.

It’s hard to convince the brain. It’s wired to be critical. But you need to know that when you’re too hard on yourself, your heart and subconscious mind are hit the most. So, it’s crucial to be kind to yourself, not shame and be on a guilt trip.

And when something affects the heart, it also automatically affects the brain. Read David R. Hawkins’ “Map of Consciousness,” and you’ll see that shame and guilt are last on the list. Shame’s vibration is the lowest. Below shame, it’s death. That means a person who continuously has feelings of shame is just one step away from death.

I care for you! If you feel shame and guilty most of the time, don’t be! Life is beautiful. Enjoy it as much as you can. Ask the Universe for guidance. If you really it from your heart, the Universe will respond.

Perfectionism

I’ll say this right now…You’ll never be perfect. Do you know why? Because perfection means there’s no scope for any growth.

Unfortunately, people who try to be perfect seldom experience a peaceful life. Most of the time, they try to perfect themselves, only to fail and be frustrated.

I don’t know whether you have tried to be perfect, but it’s hell!

Let me share a quick personal story from a few years back. You know Reddit, right? So, this successful entrepreneur was doing an AMA (Ask Me Anything). Someone asked him, “How can I make my business perfect from the start?” His answer was pretty cool: “You can never be perfect, so just start!”

This single sentence influenced me so much that I have stopped being perfect since. And you know what? I’m actually happy now!

Bad Sleeping Habits

Are you a night owl or a morning person? Does it really matter when you go to sleep?

Debatable!

But what really matters is how much sleep you get in 24 hours? Doctors strongly recommend to get at least 8 hours of sleep daily. Anything less than that is not good for your mental and physical health. Make sure to catch up on your Zzzz’s!

Why is getting adequate sleep important? Because sleep heals you. Mentally and physically.

So, it doesn’t matter whether you’re a night owl or a morning person; if you sleep 8 hours daily, all is fine.

Not Knowing Your Self Worth

How do you view yourself? Do you see yourself as someone who can achieve anything? Or someone who is always victimized and the epicenter of negative life events?

You must know your self-worth! Unless you do, no matter how eager and dedicated you are, things will eventually turn against your favor.

“Stop pretending and get to know who you really are. It’s time to ditch the toxic habit of living in denial.”

Forcing Things Rather Than Allowing

There’s a minuscule difference between forcing something and allowing it. Unfortunately, more people think they are allowing something to happen. Still, they always try to bend the rule in their favor.

Yeah, you can bend a rule in your favor when it’s crucial, but sometimes you have to allow something to happen.

You should not force yourself to do something that you don’t like to do. Well, you may try in the beginning, but you’ll soon abandon it and move on to something that flows through you easily.

Abusing Yourself

You are precious! Always keep this in mind. You may not be abusing yourself physically, but mentally.

What’s more, if you keep on abusing yourself, it’ll take a toll on your mental health and bring your life to a complete standstill.

People aren’t aware of it, but they unconsciously have this abusive tendency towards themselves. Criticizing is one of them. If you’re too critical of yourself, you’re mentally abusing yourself.

Promise me…You’ll end this toxic habit by the end of this year.

Being Deliberately Late

This one is rather funny! I’m sure you have met people who are deliberately late at everything.

They will spend a long time doing nothing, only to panic when the time comes and be late. Well, this, my friend, is a severe case of procrastination. And if you do this regularly, it’s time to stop it.

This one is rather funny! I’m sure you have met people who are deliberately late at everything. They will spend a long time doing nothing, only to panic when the time comes and be late.

Well, this, my friend, is a severe case of procrastination. And if you do this regularly, it’s time to stop it. Yeah, being deliberately late can be a bad habit. And you will be surprised to learn that it’s a chronic one, to say the least.

Spending Time With Energy Vampires

Don’t get spooked by the term “Energy Vampires.” No one’s going to bite you.

Jokes aside, people who suck the life energy out of you are energy vampires. These people have such a negative vibe that staying in their presence can feel mentally and physically exhausting.

Some people radiate positivity and love, while others can exhaust our energy. I’ve experienced this firsthand. The good vibes from the first group can lift us up, while the energy vampires can bring us down.

Energy vampires mostly attract pessimistic people. If you’re an optimistic person and don’t want to ruin it, stay away from these kinds of people.

It may be difficult initially, but once you do, you’ll see the change pretty soon.

Not Doing Any Physical Activity

Be honest! When was the last time you did any physical training?

Outdoor sports will do, too. Congratulations if you are regularly engaged in some physical training. But if you need help remembering the last time you lifted weights or played outdoor sports, it’s time to start it.

Doing exercise and playing outdoor sports is not only good for your body but also for your mental health. According to some studies, when you work out, your body releases chemicals that make you feel relaxed and composed.

Staying In A Toxic Environment

Though I should have included this before, staying in a toxic environment harms you.

By toxic environment, I do not mean pollution. It’s about the overall energy of the place you live or spend most of your time.

If you stay in a pessimistic environment for too long, you will unconsciously imbibe that energy within you. Unknownly, you’ll carry that negative energy and attract negative situations in your life.

Hence, if you can, you SHOULD quit a toxic environment.

In one of his books, David Dodson mentions how he thought to experience a change in energy. He decided to leave a high-energy place and spend some time in a low-energy place. A place where people are too depressed, frustrated, and angry.

He explains that after staying there, he also started feeling the same emotions. He started quarreling with shopkeepers for minor reasons, etc.

And as soon as he left the place and returned to a better, more optimistic place, he recovered quick.

Sharing is Gratitude...
